The Kirkin' of the Honest Lad and Lass in the Historic St Michael's Kirk, Inveresk marks the beginning of the Musselburgh Festival. This will be a community ecumenical service with most of the Churches in Musselburgh and the Youth Organisations of the town taking part. This year the service will begin at 11.00 a.m. and as Inveresk is a very big Church a very warm invitation is extended if you would like to be there.
At 10.30 a.m. the Town Band will lead the procession of Honest Lads, Lasses, Attendants, representatives from East Lothian Council, Musselburgh & Inveresk Community Council, Old Musselburgh Club, Honest Toun's Association, as well as many youth and local organizations. This parade will leave from the Town Hall, by way of Newbigging to worship at Inveresk.
The service is followed by a moving open air Act of Remembrance at the Parish War Memorial Cross, where the Honest Lad and Lass lay their traditional blue and white floral wreath in the shape of an anchor and the words to 'The Fallen' are spoken by Dr T. J. Renouf, M.M. in memory of all those who lived and died serving our country and community.
The Ode to the Fallen
They shall grow not old
as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
nor the years condemn
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning
We will remember them.
Lest we forget.
